For the last 25 years, Pacific Golf Academy has been helping junior golfers in the Vancouver area become better athletes and better golfers. As a result, many of our students have dreams and aspirations to one day play college golf in America. We want to share this important article to help the Pacific Golf Academy parents understand exactly what they can do to help their children be recruited for a college golf scholarship.

Being recruited to play college golf is sometimes confusing, stressful and extremely time consuming. Many young juniors will become overwhelmed in the process and rely on their parents help for guidance and advise. In addition, we are in Canada and being recruited to a university in America can sometimes be confusing. To help our parents out, here is a list of some of the best things to be doing:

Encourage your child to play in as many junior tournaments as possible. Juniors should start playing local events here in Vancouver, and if possible, can look to start playing junior events in America during the summer holiday. Events like the Future Champions events in America, always have college coaches in attendance.

Student athletes in America are students first and athletes second. All college golf coaches recruit students with excellent academic records.

During junior golf tournaments, parents should not show too much emotion after each shot your child plays. It’s ok if your child hits a bad shot or has a bad round. This happens for even the best players in the world and coaches understand this. Recruiting is often more about finding a good golfer with a good attitude and someone who work hard at their game. Coaches are not expecting your child to be a perfect golfer and neither should you.

Avoid saying phrases like, “You need to play better to get recruited”. This gives a lot of pressure and is counterproductive.

Children need their parents to provide guidance and support at many times during their life, including the college recruiting process.

In conclusion, parents sometimes focus too much on what other families are doing. Learn from other family’s experiences, but realize you are on your own journey. Support your child, encourage them to research which schools they would like to attend, and always stay positive.

Coaches want to see parents who are supportive and have raised an independent thinker. If you are a parent that is too involved, too pushy, giving too much pressure to your child, the coach will notice this and potentially be reluctant to recruit your child.
